MEETING OBJECTIVE

PORK CHOPS ON A STICK, FRIED PICKLES AND A SOAPBOX – POLITICS IS LOCAL, BUT RETIREMENT SECURITY DREAMS ARE UNIVERSAL.

Retirement industry and political leaders team up to address the needs of today’s workers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world.   Nothing is quite the same as it was before, except for our dreams of a secure retirement.   The desire for every worker to be able to work by choice, and not by necessity drives retirement savings behavior and employers’ retirement plan decisions.

The enactment of SECURE provided evidence that retirement plan professionals, lawmakers, and policy makers can find common grounds to enhance the retirement readiness and financial wellness of working Americans to keep the dream alive and well.

A few short months later, the COVID-19 pandemic threatened to unravel progress made, causing levels of unemployment not seen since the depression and leading some employers to back away from prior commitments in support of the retirement aspirations of their workforce.  Once again, with the CARES Act, lawmakers and retirement plan professionals found a way to collaborate to meet the urgent needs of workers.

The role of 401(k) and 403(b) plan in the overall financial wellness of working Americans was demonstrated.  A role not limited to enhancing retirement readiness but also encompassing the accumulation of emergency savings that can help in the most dire moments.   Not only can 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans help employees accumulate toward their goal to retire, plans can also help employees with their need for access to liquidity, immediate cash available in case of emergency.  Again, the partnership between political leaders and the retirement industry was a driving force.

For the first time at a Council meeting, we will invite lawmakers to engage in a dialogue with retirement plan professionals and to shape the way working Americans save and invest to meet retirement and other financial needs with expanded access and adequate funding by default.

How to Evaluate Income Options in Post-Secure Act World
Session sponsored by Prudential Retirement
The Secure Act has a far-reaching impact on the manner in which plan sponsors review and monitor investment options (including income options) in Post-Secure Act world.  The required participant income disclosure reframes the risks (running out of money in retirement) and metrics (projected income and replacement ratio) that plan sponsors must consider as part of their investment review process. Reflecting these outcome-oriented considerations, plan sponsors must now evaluate emerging risks and benchmark alternative types of income solutions. We will help navigate these new considerations under the annuity selection safe harbor and review related investment design questions.
Speaker: Marc Pester
