MEETING OBJECTIVE

HOUSTON, WE ARE A GO!   Change at the speed of light in the Retirement Plans Business.

Our goal for the Semi-annual Meeting is to map out a trajectory as we are being propelled into the 2020s.  The future of the Retirement business will be determined in part by our ability to address the strategic issues of the day:  cybersecurity, legal challenges to participant data usage, coverage in the 50-100 employee segment, changing workforce demographics and client expectations, industry consolidation, emergence of powerhouses, business model convergence, and expansion from retirement planning to financial wellness.

From the meeting, we will deliver tangible benefits for the industry in the form of position pieces articulating our professional perspective on the conditions of success of financial wellness initiatives.  These pieces will provide guidelines for plan sponsors and their advisors as they consider expanding the scope of intervention of their retirement plan service provider.

We will hear success stories from plan sponsors who have made huge strides enhancing the retirement readiness and financial wellness of their employee population with concerted initiatives inspired by Council members.

We will collaborate to identify working models to address challenges of plan advisors at five breakout sessions:

  • Rewarding members of advisory teams with fair and effective compensation
  • Expanding the scope of HCE and NQDC services to add value to client relationships
  • Building cost-effective small plan service models
  • Creating inspiring team cultures
  • Addressing participant lifetime planning needs

Feedback on their strategic initiatives will help recordkeeping service providers and investment managers enhance products (Stable Value, QDIAs) and service models (enhanced features, responsible data-driven client and participant counseling).

A collaborative discussion with the Board will drive Council initiatives for the coming decade and closing speaker Gail Buckner’s urge to “not believe everything you hear about Social Security” will inspire all to take action to enhance retirement outcomes for participants and plan sponsors.

Plan sponsor expectations are changing. To augment the consultative approach of client relationship managers and success teams, many now prefer the convenience of a 1-2-3 client experience immediately relevant and delivered just-in-time. Recordkeeping service providers and investment managers are adapting their service models to the new reality. Many sponsors expect a similar experience from their plan advisor, and others continue to see value in the personal human touch that Advisors and Client Relationship Managers can deliver. Panelists discuss the impact of innovation and of mentalities on the industry, our respective service models, and talent needs across market segments.
4:15 a.m.

 Mind The Gap...

Moderator: Alexander G. Assaley III AIF® - AFS 401(k) Retirement Services
Panelists:    Keith Gredys - Kidder Advisers
Stephen Saxon - Groom Law Firm
                      Pete Swisher - Pentegra
A continual (and warranted) criticism of the Defined Contribution Retirement System is that nearly half of all Americans don’t have a workplace plan – 401(k), 403(b), SIMPLE IRA, etc. Many studies indicate that, when employees have a Plan at work, they are 5X more likely to save for retirement. This session offers a panel of experts to share ideas and strategies to help expand coverage for working Americans, predominately those in the small business marketplace – including input on regulatory initiatives, vendor and advisor business models, technology / innovation, and strategies for scale.
